The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

TIME – past, present and future – interwoven into this gripping, un-put-downable story!

Total Wow! I couldn’t put this one down! The highly engaging premise of this novel: extract a handful of doomed global citizens from various points in time and drop them into a top secret government control study in modern day England. Treat them like refugees and try to acclimatize them in less than a year. The result: chaos and mayhem were bound to ensue…!

Kaliane Bradley, who incidentally works for Penguin, takes many poetic licenses with the English language and I often had to resort to the dictionary AP on my Kindle tablet – but this did not in any way detract from my wholehearted enjoyment of this highly engaging novel.

And great news!! BBC is adapting it as a TV Series. (Don’t confuse this book or the upcoming series with the Spanish TV series of the same name. They are two totally different artistic animals!)

All the characters were brilliantly drawn and I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with all of the “Expats” – barring Cardingham, of course!!!

I’m not a huge fan of time-travel novels, but this story had so much more than just time travel to recommend it. I am so glad I listened to all the hype and put a hold on this at my local library. As luck would have it, I was offered a “beat the line” 7 day loan by the TPL and jumped on it. At first I was worried that I wouldn’t finish it in time, but, no worries, I got through it in three days with time to spare – I began to get grouchy when I was forced to put the book down and do mundane things like work and sleep. Just so good!

I’m also sorry now that I missed the boat on getting the ARC on NetGalley when this was on offer! I will have to buy my own copy because I definitely want to reread this one in the very near future. Can’t wait for the BBC TV series based on this book. 5 out of 5 shining stars!
